Overview
Jess McKinney runs a residential interior design studio in Brooklyn as a solo practitioner — client communication, sourcing, project management, and billing all sit with her. Four renovations are in construction and two more are out for proposal, tracked in Projects.
Her week is built around site days with contractor Jonathon D’Amore and clients like Alexis Swanson, which is why Tuesdays and Wednesdays rarely hold anything else. She bills at milestones rather than monthly, so cash flow follows project phases instead of the calendar.
How she works
Jess sends proposals on Monday mornings and follows up on Thursday if there has been no reply. Site visits are batched into Tuesdays and Wednesdays alongside Jonathon D’Amore, so email slows to a stop on those days and catches up in the evening.
Invoices go out at project milestones rather than on a monthly cycle — the piece of the week she would most like back, per Goals.
